Volunteer Assessor (Remote)
AVP Britain is looking for Volunteer Assessors to support its Distance Learning programme, a correspondence-based course offered to people in prison and those in the community. The organisation helps people develop nonviolent ways of dealing with conflict, and this role plays a key part in keeping the programme growing.
Location and commitment
This opportunity is fully remote. The expected time commitment is around 1–3 hours per week, with at least one learner assessment completed each week. New assessors complete an induction and four short online training modules before starting.
Deadline to apply: 15 December 2025
What the role involves
Volunteer Assessors review learning materials completed by participants and offer written feedback that is supportive, reflective, and rooted in nonviolent communication. The feedback helps learners apply conflict resolution skills to their daily lives and deepen their understanding of themselves and others.
Main responsibilities
- Read and assess completed workbooks.
- Provide constructive, encouraging written feedback.
- Follow AVP Britain’s principles and assessment guidelines.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when handling learner information.
- Communicate with the Distance Learning Project Officer about workload and any concerns.
Who we are looking for
This role suits someone with around three years’ experience in fields such as education, mentoring, counselling, social care, or advice/advocacy—professional roles, volunteer experience, placements, and student experience all count.
Ideal qualities
- Clear, compassionate written communication.
- Ability to encourage deeper reflection without judgement.
- Good organisational habits and reliability in meeting deadlines.
- Comfortable working independently while staying connected with the AVPB team.
- Basic IT skills (email, Word/Google Docs, accessing shared folders).
Helpful knowledge (or willingness to learn)
- Nonviolence and conflict transformation principles.
- Diversity, equity and inclusion awareness.
- Safeguarding and duty of care.
- Trauma-informed practice.
- Understanding of the challenges faced by people in prison or marginalised communities.
Impact of the role
Your feedback directly supports people learning new ways to approach conflict, build self-confidence, strengthen relationships, and make positive changes in their lives. Assessors help ensure the programme stays effective, supportive, and accessible—allowing AVP Britain to reach more people across the UK.
